Subtitles can be categorized by the following criteria: script- or picture-based; embedded into containers like AVI, Matroska and so on or in one or more separate files.

The simple script-based subtitle formats only give a time position and the text which should be shown. More advanced formats also know styling (color, font, font size and so on) and positioning (visual, like centered bottom).

The best known picture-based subtitle format is the DVD subpicture format. The picture-based subtitles are good for non-computer-based environments like DVD players, TV and videoconferencing.
