The VDMSound Project

Note: VDMSound is no longer supported or recommended. Please use DOSBox, instead.

VDMSound is a soundcard emulator for the MS Windows NT/2000/XP DOS emulator. It is written in C++ under the GNU General Public License (GPL) . It works with Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

ZIP file VDMSound2.1.0.exe (from the Sierra Help Pages)

VDMSound provides sound support to DOS applications and games, overcoming what has probably been the most exasperating limitation of Windows NT's DOS -- sound support. VDMSound emulates an MPU-401 interface (for outputting high-quality MIDI music), a SoundBlaster compatible (SB16, SBPro 2, SB2, SBPro, etc.) implementation (for digital sound effects and FM/AdLib music), as well as a standard game-port interface (for playing games with joystick support).

VDMSound includes DirectSound support and incorporates full FM/AdLib emulation. VDMSound is easy to use and integrates with Windows Explorer as a shell extension (you will be able to right-click on your DOS game executable that you wish to start (any .exe, .com or .bat), and select "Run with VDMS")
