Description

3 Space was introduced in 1980 for the Apple II game Stellar 7. The code was written and re-written from scratch many times throughout the history of Dynamix. The current version of Torque still uses the extension .dts for shape files, which is short for "Dynamix Three Space".

Design

Some of the major advancements of 3Space include:

  1. Introduction of 3-axis rotation and solid-fill polygons for Arcticfox for the Amiga (Stellar 7 was single-axis, wireframe)
  2. Originally there was no editor so that all points had to be entered in text form (coordinates). Later Dave McClurg wrote TSE, "The Shape Editor" to do this visually.
  3. Introduction of Gouraud shading for polygons.
  4. Redo of 3Space for Tribes from scratch.

Kevin Ryan wrote the C-64 version of 3Space. It used the character display mode of the C-64 and would build the character sets on the fly to create the filled in polygons.

Sierra On-Line Inc, Coarsegold, California has signed to use Dynamix Inc.'s 3Space three dimensional software to enhance future Sierra products for fiscal 1991: Sierra says the software will enable it to create a new zenith of realism in its animated adventure games.[1]
